It is simply to the find yourself so it begins to fall apart, although slap-up finale rescues it regarding the ‘red’. Admirably staged and wisely dialogued, it has zero great difficulties within the living down its incredibly unsightly identity.” [ 8 ]

Brand new film’s copywriter and you may manager, Robert Rossen, sets up an effective multidimensional chess online game, to possess mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, his company (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), a great cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can an effective scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose sis (Nina Foch) spent some time working in the casino and you may dated a great corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). Although the plot employs a familiar trend, this new characterizations was fresh and shows good enough in order to overbalance. Dialog are terse and relevant, preventing the emotional, phoney contact. Strange cam bases come-along on occasion to help you heighten appeal and temporarily arrest the interest. Its mostly a matter of seeing Mr. Powell read his paces smartly when you find yourself a giant throw from stars and you can performers give him regular support. Evelyn Keyes performs the good nothing woman who brings about the newest finest in him and you may Ellen Drew ‘s the easy and you can slinky vixen who gets him into jams. Thomas Gomez is fatty once the villain and you may Lee J. Cobb do a separate ready journey while the a tired cops inspector whom fundamentally shuts the way it is. Many ingesting and you may smoking is done by all worried.” [ several ]
