Bicycle Tyres Are a Different Problem

A car compressor and a bicycle share a job description and almost nothing else. The pressures, the volumes and the valves are all different, and knowing how is what prevents a burst tube.

The Pressure Range Is Much Wider

Car tyres cluster around thirty to thirty-five PSI. Bicycle tyres range from around twenty on a wide mountain bike tyre to over a hundred on a narrow road tyre.

That is a considerably wider span, and getting it wrong matters more, because the volume of air is small and a modest error is a large percentage.

Where to Find the Figure

  • Printed on the tyre sidewall, usually as a range
  • Given as both a minimum and a maximum
  • Adjusted within that range for rider weight and conditions
  • Lower for comfort and grip, higher for speed on smooth surfaces
  • Never above the stated maximum

Unlike a car, where the vehicle sets the figure, the tyre sets it on a bicycle, and the range is genuinely a range rather than a single correct number.

They Lose Pressure Fast

The property that surprises people coming from cars. A road bike tyre can lose a noticeable proportion of its pressure in a week, because the volume is small and the pressure is high.

That means checking before most rides rather than monthly, which is why a convenient pump matters more for a bicycle than for a car.

Valve Types

Two common types and they are not interchangeable without an adapter. Schrader valves are the wider type also used on cars. Presta valves are narrower, used on road bikes, and have a small locking nut that must be unscrewed before inflating.

Most compressors are made for Schrader. A Presta adapter is small, inexpensive and essential, and forgetting it is the usual reason a pump turns out to be useless.

Small Volume, Fast Filling

A compressor sized for car tyres moves enough air to fill a bicycle tube very quickly, which is convenient and requires attention.

Check the Tyre While You Are There
